SAXONIA: 1954 - Deluxe & colorful intro interiors/launch brochure

Product Description

Cunard Line:  Hard to resist this deluxe intro brochure from 1954 for SAXONIA that is filled with splashy color.

The SAX was the first of Cunard's four post-war ships intended for the Canadian trade.  The importance Cunard placed on the new "SAXONIA Sisters" is underlined by launch photos showing Lady Churchill reading a message from Sir Winston himself, and the four big photos of the launch.

Most of the twenty-four pages contain colorful big renderings of First and Tourist interiors.  In the center is a big fold-out of the famous Turner portrait of the ship on the St. Lawrence.   Cunard lavished money on this brochure with gold foil trim on the cover and expensive coated stock used throughout.

Cunard used a bit of whimsy in the interior decoration.  " ... there is a Canadian flavour about some of the decorative detail," the text informs us.  "Imaginative use has been made of designs that derive from Canadian symbols.  Some of the wall coverings make use of the Maple Leaf, Indian tribal motifs inspired by the traditionally colourful blankets, the tomahawk and arrow and the husky dog."

And sure enough, look closely and you can see Canadian symbols throughout - Indian designs on the First Class Dining Room floor,  maple leaves on the walls of the First Class Lounge,  and foliage/fauna patterns on carpets throughout.  Unfortunately the public didn't buy into this deco whimsy and it was mostly ripped out when the ship was converted into the CARMANIA in 1962.

Good condition with light cover wear.
