CARIBIA: 1949 - Brochure for disastrous 1969 ex-CARONIA cruises

Product Description

Universal Cruise Line: A twelve-page brochure, perhaps the only one ever printed, for the disastrously short career of the CARIBIA.

Cunard sadly had to sell off its money-losing but glorious CARONIA in 1968. The buyer was a Greek-financed firm known as Universal Cruise Line. The ship was given a quickie retrofit that didn't address enough of the deferred maintenance and then was sent to New York in early 1969 for cruise service.

All of the ship photos in this brochure are borrowed from Cunard days, even the cover photo, where if you look closely you can see the Cunard and White Star flags flying on the foremast.

This brochure tries to make the best of the ship's history. "CARONIA passengers thought nothing of paying as much as $30,000 for an around-the-world cruise. And they got their money's worth in luxury and elegance. That same luxury is now part of the CARIBIA'S Caribbean cruises. Prepared to be pampered unmercifully as the CARIBIA glides out of the harbor ..."

Tortured unmercifully was closer to the truth. After the first cruise in February 1969 disgruntled passengers demanded their money back. During the second cruise an engine room explosion ended the ship's career. Eventually the CARONIA/CARIBIA was towed away to the scrappers but broke free in Guam and impaled herself on a reef.
