STATENDAM: 1929 - 1935 cruise brochure w/ interiors & separate deck plan

Product Description

Holland America Line - A thirty-six page novelty brochure for the STATENDAM's 1935 "Luxury Cruise to the Mediterranean, Egypt and Holy Land." The cover features a die-cut opening in the shape of an arch with two layers of fold-out camels and natives in the background.

The big STATENDAM departed New York on February 7, 1935, and didn't return until April 7. Along with itineraries and optional tours, the brochure contains a color route map and b&w photos of Mediterranean sights. A double-page spread shows off the ship's upright lines, a reminder that while the ship took her maiden voyage in 1929, she was laid down in 1921 with construction delayed for years.

Large b&w interior photos show the Indoor Swimming Pool, Dining Salon, Lounge, the bedroom and sitting room of a cabin-de-luxe, a double room with private bath, and several views of deck activities.

Included with the brochure is a large (33" by 42"), color-coded plan showing eight decks.

Sadly, the STATENDAM with all the luxuries shown here was burned to a crisp when caught in crossfire during the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940.

Good condition with light wear.
