State Steamship Company - A twelve-page, circa 1874 fleet brochure (3.5" by 6") with information on the newly formed State Line.

The line was founded in 1872 to sail the Glasgow-New York route. The original fleet of six is listed: STATE OF ALABAMA (1873), STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA (1873), STATE OF VIRGINIA (1873), STATE OF GEORGIA (1873), STATE OF INDIANA (1874), and STATE OF NEVADA (1874).

Glowing text lauds the luxury onboard: "The elegant Saloon ... is elegantly fitted up with every comfort and luxury required to make a delightful sea voyage. Attached to it are the Ladies' Private Cabin, Deck Saloon and Gentlemen's Smoking Room, all of which directly communicate with the Steward's Department by means of patent electric bells." 

A special treat are the fold-out plans showing, at top, the STATE OF VIRGINIA, and, at bottom, the slightly newer STATE OF INDIANA. Also included are rates and a list of company offices. A color lithograph on the back cover shows a three-masted steamship sailing through rolling seas.

Allan Line bought the line in 1891 and quickly ditched most of the State Line fleet.  Three went to Turkey and one went to Aberdeen Line.  Only the STATE OF NEBRASKA continued sailing for Allan until a 1902 date with the breakers.
