It was laid up in 1962.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor once the accolades were accurate.  At 520 feet, the AQUARAMA was built on the same WW2 troopship hull as Matson's MARIPOSA and MONTEREY of 1952 and was to bring big ship amenities to the Great Lakes.  She could hold 2,500 passengers and 160 cars.  Her cruising speed was 22 knots.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vessel also brought big ship pitfalls such as a draft too deep for many harbors and limited maneuverability in tight docking.  The crew nicknamed her \"Aqua-ram-a-lot\".  She was placed on Detroit to Cleveland service in 1957.    \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are ten color photos of the streamlined beauty showing interiors and decks.  I love her looks with that gray hull and tomato red faux-funnel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlas, a ship that large made no sense in ferry service on the Great Lakes.  In 1962 the AQUARAMA began an unprecedented forty-five year lay-up.
