UNITED STATES: 1952 - Original Blue Riband chart & sketches by Gibbs & Cox draftsman #1

Product Description

United States Lines:  From the Frank Braynard Collection, a blueprint style artwork comparing the S.S. UNITED STATES' Blue Riband-winning maiden voyage to record-holders of days gone by.

This artwork is by George Tamaro, a Gibbs and Cox statistician and draftsman. While working for legendary S.S. UNITED STATES designer William Francis Gibbs, Tamaro created original comparison prints which combined his statistician background with his love of sketching ships. Tamaro and Braynard were friends, and Tamaro gave Braynard much of his artwork back in the day. Although undated, this work is from the 1950s.

In the 22" by 44" blueprint, Tamaro cleverly drew Blue Riband winners down the left side and a large profile of the SSUS toward the right. He then charted days at sea for each vessel along the bottom and their average speed in knots across the top. Along the right side are nautical miles sailed. For comparison, he added America's first steamship to cross the Atlantic, SAVANNAH, to list too.

Lots of stats about the UNITED STATES are spelled out in the outline of the ship. Formulas for determining the various speeds and times are included for those of us who didn't give up on math after school.

Tamaro finished off his imaginative artwork with his initials in a circle in the lower right corner.

 Very good condition.
