Just by chance the radio operator heard the distress signal as he was tying his shoes in preparation to go to bed. Rostron and his officers were dumbfounded that a huge luxury liner could go down, but when the CARPATHIA finally reached the TITANIC's last known position, all they found were lifeboats and a few floating deck chairs.
