DORIC: 1964 - Beautiful, artistic & large music box

Product Description

Home Lines - An impressive souvenir from the gift shop of the DORIC - a large music box with a marquetry foliage design on the cover.

The hexangular box is covered with mahogany veneer with lighter woods used in the marquetry. With all the juts and angles, the music box case is a work of art. The inside is lined with red velvet along with a mirror. The wind-up key is underneath and a haunting melody, unknown to me, plays when you lift the cover. No where is there a manufacturer's or artist's mark, a shame because they deserve to take credit for this beauty.

The music box comes from the collection of the late Sandy Hook pilot Captain Joseph Licata. He taped a tag to the underside reading, "Bought on the DORIC for $25 value on 12/88 about $65." I think he meant to put a coma after "value". Both the DORIC and Home Lines were gone by December 1988, He probably bought the music box during the DORIC's heyday in the 1970s for $25, which had increased to $65 by 1988 when he typed out the note. Today (2025), that same $25 is equivalent to $150.
