ROBIN LOCKSLEY: 1941 - Custom 1:200th model of famed combo liner

Product Description

Robin Line - A one-of-a-kind, 1:200th-scale wooden model of the ROBIN LOCKSLEY, famed WW2 convoy ship and the first of six new combo liners built in the early 1940s.

The model comes from the Frank Braynard Collection and is believed to have built for Robin Line at the time of the ship's 1941 maiden voyage. The attached photo shows Braynard displaying the model in 1960 when he first acquired it.

The model is 30" long while the original wood base measures 7.5" by 36". A Plexiglas cover was fitted later and is 9.5" tall. There are lots of custom details to be enjoyed - all manner of deck fittings and machinery, rigged cargo booms, railings, lifeboats, and applied windows.

The George Sharp-designed beauty was known for her luxurious cabins for twelve passengers that featured shared verandahs, a popular feature that Sharp also used on American Export's FOUR ACES.  She and her sisters were fast and that speed enabled all six to survive the war and return to service.

While mostly forgotten today, the ship is still fondly remembered in Malta. The ROBIN LOCKSLEY was part of a convoy of four ships fighting through Axis bombs and torpedoes to deliver a crucial load of fuel and food to the embattled island in 1942. With the new supplies, Malta was able to fight off attackers and keep the island operating as a base for the invasion of North Africa.

After the war the ROBIN LOCKSLEY continued sailing for Robin Line. She was broken up around 1970.

Included with the model is the November 1940 issue of "Marine Progress" with a story on the new Robin Line vessel. Also, a booklet for a ship model display during World War 2 which included the ROBIN LOCKSLEY. Perhaps this model was commissioned for that show?
