ANNA SALEN: 1940 - Survivor's certificate & photos from fire

Product Description

Rederi A/S Pulp Company: A survivor's certificate and five photos from the collision and fire aboard the refugee ship ANNA SALEN on August 13, 1952.

Early in a Bremerhaven to New York crossing on August 13, 1952, with more than six-hundred passengers and crew onboard, the ANNA SALEN rammed a Norwegian whale factory ship in thick fog off of Scotland. Fire broke out on the bow but was quickly extinguished. The damaged ship limped into Scapa Flow where the bow was repaired and the ship resumed her voyage.

ANNA SALEN's print shop distributed a "Survivor's Certificate" to passengers. It reads, "The Bearer of This Certificate is Hereby Proclaimed as a Survivor of the m.s. ANNA SALEN - August 13, 1952 in the waters of Pentland Firth." I'm assuming the signature is that of the captain.

Four 8" by 10" photos show the damage of twisted steel, a big gash in the bow, and a blackened hull. The fifth photo shows the embarkation ramp against Olympic rings painted on the hull. Before the fateful voyage, ANNA SALEN had spent several months ferrying visitors to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, hence the symbol.

ANNA SALEN was launched as the Moore McCormack freighter MOOREMACLAND in 1940, quickly converted into the British flat-top carrier HMS ARCHER, and then postwar rebuilt into an emigrant ship. In the mid-1950s she became Hellenic Mediterranean's TASMANIA but by 1960 was operating  as the old and worn freighter UNION RELIANCE. In November 1961 she was sailing out of Houston when her steering jammed. The ship rammed a chemical tanker. The resulting fire destroyed both ships with a loss of eleven lives.
