Then in the winter of 1959 the JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT'S capacity was changed to 1,210 in Tourist Class. A second pool and air conditioning were added. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis plan shows that the sweep of public rooms on Lounge Deck still offered plenty of relaxing space. But her cabins, which in pre-war years gone boasted of all having a porthole, were now tightly packed and 8 abreast in some places. Also in the 1959 retrofit, her once-distinctive squat funnels were replaced by taller domed ones. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a map showing her route around the world from Amsterdam to Fremantle via the Suez Canal, and then through the Panama Canal to Port Everglades and back to Holland. There is a simple cut-away showing deck locations but no photos. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Dutch sold the ship to the Greek Line in 1962 for conversion into the bargain cruise ship LAKONIA. Tragically, the LAKONIA caught fire in December 1963 resulting in the deaths of 130 people.
