ATLANTIS: 1913 - 1937 Caribbean cruise brochure w/ deck plans

Product Description

Royal Mail Line - A fold-out (25" by 36") deck plan brochure for the winter 1937 Caribbean cruises of the ATLANTIS.

The plans show five decks. In typical Royal Mail fashion, the decks are named in reverse of the custom with A Deck being the lowest and D Deck the highest before the Promenade and Boat decks. A swimming pool is fitted into hold between the bridge and the passenger superstructure where it could be removed quickly to load freight.

Torturing turtles apparently was a thing back in '37. One photo shows a young lass in heels riding on top of the shell of a Kemp's ridley sea turtle, a tight nose around the turtle's neck providing the reigns. "Cayman Islands turtle riding" is the chirpy caption. No wonder the species are endangered today.

The ATLANTIS was one of the first large ships exclusively dedicated to cruising. The ship was launched in 1913 as the ANDES for Southampton-La Plata service.  When newer stock took over in 1930, the ship was rebuilt as the ATLANTIS, an all white cruise ship that held 450 in one class. The ATLANTIS was a popular cruise ship throughout the 1930s. She survived the war and was used for austerity voyages to Australia and New Zealand before being scrapped in 1952.
