Ignazio Messina Compagnie de Navigation: A rare souvenir from the 1930s for Ignazio Messina's service from Genoa to what was then colonial Italian Eritrea.

The 4.25" by 5.25" ashtray features the bright colors and deco design made famous by the Verbano ceramic artisans in the Italian region where it was made, Laveno. Colorful ashtrays for the REX and CONTE DI SAVOIA also came from Verbano.

Ignazio Messina offered biweekly service from Genoa to Massaua (now called Mitsiwa). The slogan at top of the ashtray translates as "Postal Line for the Empire". The empire ended in 1941 when the Allies invaded. Eritrea finally gained independence in 1991. Italy's Messina Line still sails today.
