Instead, the fireworks began October 4 when a line ruptured, spewing diesel fuel onto the hot engine.  A fire ensued, one which the crew could not contain. The captain ordered the ship to be abandoned, and into the rough seas went the lifeboats and rafts. A fortuitously positioned tanker, heroic efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard, a well-trained crew, and Lady Luck ensured that no lives were lost, although one lifeboat went missing overnight. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe poor PRINSENDAM, reduced to a burned out hulk, sank a week later.
