AMERICA: 1940 - 7 original & historic news photos 1946-1964

Product Description

United States Lines - From the Frank Braynard Collection, seven original news photos of the S.S. AMERICA in her early and late years.

The first (7" by 9") was taken on November 23, 1946, as the ship approached Southampton on her maiden peacetime transatlantic voyage. She is passing a beat-up old tub that upon closer examination is the QUEEN MARY undergoing her postwar rehab. The original wire copy is attached to the back.

Photo two (8" by 10") is of workmen carefully lifting the huge builder's model of the AMERICA. I am not sure if the photo was taken at Art Model Studios where the model was built or in USL headquarters where it was displayed.

An unusual image (8" by 10") shows Paul Manship's "Evening" sculpture commissioned for the AMERICA's main lounge. Manship also crafted "Morning" and "Day" for the ship. He created another sculpture you may have seen - the huge "Prometheus" stature at Rockefeller Center.

Two more photos (8" by 10") from the 1950s or 60s show the vessel arriving in New York and tied up at the pier with a SSUS funnel sticking up across the pier shed.

Image six was taken in September 1963 after a labor strike forced USL to cancel all of AMERICA's remaining six voyages for the year. The engine room was shut down and the "dead" vessel was towed to Hoboken for lay-up. The ship returned to sailing early in 1964.

A bittersweet image (8" by 10") from October 1964 shows Captain Frederick Fender (in sunglasses) arriving in New York on his final voyage aboard the ship. Frank Braynard was aboard for the occasion, having slept overnight on the pilot boat. The voyage was also the second-to-last for the AMERICA. At the conclusion of her next crossing on October 27, the ship discharged crew and passengers and then headed to Newport News for sale to Chandris Lines.
