EUROPA: 1930 - First Class deck plan booklet from 1957

Product Description

French Line: A sixteen-page First Class deck plan dated June 1957.

The plan opens up to 8" by 38" and covers nine decks, from the F Deck Swimming Pool way down below to the open promenade up top of Sun Deck. As per custom on these 1950s French Line plans, no furniture is shown in the public rooms. But plenty of detail is included with the cabins and I have already reserved the palatial Normandie Suite for my imaginary voyage. If you must insist, the equally-nice Algerie Suite is available on the starboard side.

The LIBERTE was scheduled to enter service in early 1950 but an October 1949 fire destroyed much of the restored passenger accommodations. In fact, this ship was plagued by disasters beginning at the shipyard in March 1929. A fire swept North German Lloyd's almost-completed EUROPA and she almost was scrapped. As an Allied-operated troopship after WW2, the deteriorated ship repeatedly caught fire. And then in 1946 she broke loose in Le Havre during a storm and holed herself upon the wreckage of the sunken PARIS.

But the 1950s were good years for the LIBERTE when she operated as the flagship of the French Line. When the new FRANCE entered service in 1962, tears were shed when the well-traveled liner went to the breakers.
