DE GRASSE: 1924 - Large cruise brochure & plan for 1950 cruises

Product Description

French Line:  A large fold-out (21" by 34") brochure from 1950 for the DE GRASSE carrying far more significance than what the breezy copy indicates.  Please let me explain.

At the conclusion of WW2, the once mighty French Line found itself with just two liners - worn-out ILE DE FRANCE heavily in need of rehab, and sunken DE GRASSE, resting on the bottom of the harbor at Bordeaux, a parting gift from the Germans. The DE GRASSE was raised, plucked of a funnel, and rebuilt as a smart little liner, and became the illustrious French Line's sole North Atlantic ocean liner.

By 1949 the ILE returned to service and in August 1950 the LIBERTE arrived. You can imagine the pride felt by the French at their recovery when little DE GRASSE could be sent out cruising.

"4,000 miles of gracious living," proclaimed the French Line, "aboard the S.S. DE GRASSE, a ship which has enjoyed a popularity equaled by few."  Dated October 1950, the brochure promotes three Caribbean cruises from New York in early 1951.

Detailed plans show five decks, a whimsical route map indicates a southern Caribbean itinerary, and extensive rates cover each cabin.  Eight interior photos are included: Salon, Library and Writing Room, two different outside cabins for two, the sitting room of a suite, Dining Room, Children's Play, and the Promenade Deck.  "Homeward bound," noted the French Line, "exhilarated, tanned, and with a new sparkle in your eye!"  It was more than the passengers with new sparkle.
