QUEEN MARY: 1936 - Deco lounge table w/ beautiful veneers

Product Description

Cunard Line: A lovely veneered lounge table with silver-bronze trim from the R.M.S. QUEEN MARY.

The table measures 26.75" square and stands 29" tall. The table is in the style made by G.T. Rackstraw especially for the QUEEN MARY and was used in several locations throughout the ship. The attached photos show similar tables in the First Class Starboard Gallery and, with a slightly different top, in the short-lived Ballroom.

The fluted table column features a deco design ending on a square stand with four decorative plugs, two of which are removeable to access shafts for bolting the table to the deck. The base is covered in Bakelite and highlighted in silver-bronze trim. The Bakelite is fragile and much has broken off, revealing the curving plywood form underneath.

I count at least four different veneers. Looking at my chart of woods used aboard the ship, the table top could be Pommele Mahogany, expertly bookended. The sides look like Pear Wood, the column a type of mahogany and the decorative column inserts Walnut Burr. The overall effect is stunning.

There are none of the usual manufacturer or ship markings on the underside of the table top. Most likely the table was redone during its long life onboard and the markings were not recreated which would account for the excellent condition of the top, or that the table was one of a handful of extras at G.T. Rackstraw sold to employees after the war. It comes from the collection of Jon Miller who purchased the table in the 1990s from the late Steve Booth of Atlantic Crossing in Southampton.

Shipping in the U.S. via UPS Ground is $175 additional.

Excellent condition except for the base where most of the Bakelite covering is gone.
