Various: pre-war - 1940 United Fruit Company fleet brochure w/ deck plans

Product Description
United Fruit Company: A fold-out brochure (22.5" by 40") for United Fruit's 1940 Caribbean and West Indies voyages on their "Mail Boats" of the early 1930s.

The emphasis is on "It's Travel America Year", meaning passengers did not have to face the perils of the war in Europe. "The peaceful ports of the Caribbean," explained United Fruit, "more glamorous than ever today to those who want a restful sea trip - are being served by the Great White Fleet with its American flag liners just as faithful and dependably as ever."

The seven half-tone photos on the first fold-out section show a variety of shipboard scenes with delighted passengers. When fully opened the brochure shows itineraries and rates, plus deck plans for the VERAGUA. Three decks are shown plus there is a note stating that the plans are similar to sisters QUIRIGUA, ANTIGUA, TALAMANCA, CHIRIQUI, and JAMAICA.

Surprisingly, all six ships survived the war and were restored to their former grandeur in the late 1940s. But with new ships arriving and the passenger trade diminishing, in the mid-1950s United Fruit cut off two-thirds of their superstructures, leaving space for just twelve passengers.
