MARDI GRAS: 1961 - Early color brochure w/ deck plans from 1973

Product Description
Carnival Cruise Line: An early fold-out (17" by 22") brochure from June 1973 for the MARDI GRAS, the ship that closed out one empire and launched another.

Notice the original, and short-lived, Carnival slogan promoting "The Golden Fleet", which at that time was a fleet of one. Inside the brochure are several color interior photos, five decks' worth of plans that were just slightly modified from those provided by Canadian Pacific, rates, and itineraries.

"The MARDI GRAS brings the joy and delight of leisurely, fun-filled island discovery to a great, new peak," promised Carnival's not-too-creative copywriters. "The beauty of this magnificent cruise ship is so very evident."

Canadian Pacific was only too happy to unload their last passenger ship from a fleet that once spanned both Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The start-up Carnival, cash poor, was happy take on the eleven-year-old EMPRESS OF CANADA. It was not an auspicious beginning. During the March 1972 maiden voyage for the renamed MARDI GRAS, the ship was temporarily stuck on a sand bar just a few miles from the pier. And while passengers sunned, crew with paint brushes continued to erase that horrid Canadian Pacific green trim. The funnel was a problem as Canadian Pacific had welded their CP logo on it and Carnival didn't have the money to have it removed. But some genius figured out that with slight modification and lots of red, white, and blue paint the logo would look like just an abstract C.

The rest, as they say, is history.
