DOMINION MONARCH: 1939 - Prestige First Class interiors brochure 1957

Product Description
Shaw Savill Line: A thirty-two page prestige brochure for the DOMINION MONARCH issued in 1957 as the ship's career was drawing to a close. Initially the vessel featured some of the most beautiful art deco interiors every to go to sea, but they were toned down post-war as shown in this brochure.

The textured stock covers are elegant and restrained. The ship name is featured in an embossed gold label (which shows wear). After a short history of the line, Shaw Savill fills the brochure with large b&w photos from the all-First-Class ship.

A portrait at sea shows the DOMINION MONARCH's unusual split superstructure. Photos show the Lounge, Restaurant, Smoke Room, Palm Court, Writing Room, Drawing Room, Verandah & Cinema, Games Deck, and three cabins. Smaller photos show the Gymnasium, Swimming Pool, Foyer, Lounge Deck, a single cabin, and aft end Promenade Deck entrance.

The 1939 Drawing Room contained a most bizarre looking feature - "a moulded green glass chimney-piece set in a large brilliant cut grey mirror, flanked by ribbed pilasters." From the photo it looks like a child's science fair project gone wrong. Apparently others felt the same as post-WW2 the Drawing Room was given the full period-room redo in the dusty old Adams Style. But I prefer the green glass glob.

The DOMINION MONARCH made only a few voyages to Australia in 1939 before the outbreak of war and troopship duty. She barely escaped capture when the Japanese overran Singapore as her motors were torn apart for repairs. It took an amazing effort by the crew for the ship to slip out of Singapore just ahead of the attackers. She was scrapped in 1962 after serving as a floating hotel for the Seattle World's Fair.

Very good condition with wear to the attached gold cover label.
