CALIFORNIA: 1928 - Deluxe 1929 deck plan w/ interiors

Product Description
Panama Pacific Line: A deluxe deck plan brochure from 1929 for the first of Panama Pacific's three turbo-electric liners, the CALIFORNIA.

The brochure opens to an arm-stretching 31" and then flips up to a width of 18". A big portrait of the CALIFORNIA fills the top half while the lower section shows deck plans and interiors over eight pages. Six decks covering both First and Tourist classes are shown in large scale.

Black and white photos show the First Class Verandah Cafe, Smoking Room, sitting room of a suite, two staterooms, Dining Room, Entrance Foyer, Lounge, and Library. Tourist Class photos show the Children's Playroom, Lounge, and a cabin.

Lightly touched upon in the text is that the CALIFORNIA was the first American passenger liner to feature American interior decor, thanks to public interest in the newly opened Colonial Williamsburg. Native American woods such as pine and oak were used throughout and the color choices such as apple green, cream, and rose reflected colors found in early American mansions.

The CALIFORNIA sailed for Panama Pacific until the line closed up in 1938. With a modified appearance she sailed for Moore McCormack as the URUGUAY until 1958.

Amazingly, the plan is NOT torn along the fold between the ship profile and deck plans. Company owner International Mercantile Marine Corporation mandated this complicated design for all its subsidiaries. It made for wonderfully detailed brochures, and ripped deck plans for everything from MANHATTAN to OLYMPIC.
