ANDREA DORIA & STOCKHOLM - Original maneuvering board showing disaster corordinates

Product Description

Italian Line - An original maneuvering board sheet from the 1950s marked with the coordinates of the ANDREA DORIA and STOCKHOLM leading up to their fateful collision.

The 12.25" square sheet comes from the Frank Braynard Collection. Braynard and "A Night to Remember" author Walter Lord were called down to the newsroom of WNBC in Rockefeller Station on the night of July 25-26, 1956, to provide commentary during the disaster. Frank must have had this sheet marked up during the official inquest a few months.

Side one shows in red the movements of the STOCKHOLM as plotted by the DORIA. On the flip side the movements of both ships are plotted. Notes in the upper left margin show the STOCKHOLM's headings and those in the upper right show the DORIA's. In the lower left Frank wrote "John Barnsby (RCA Radar)" along with a phone number plus "referred by Elmer Walling at Moran".

An excellent resource for us landlubbers is Alvin Moscow's book on the disaster, "Collision Course". In the first chapters Moscow refers to maneuvering boards and the coordinates shown here to set up the tragic errors that led to the accident.

The STOCKHOLM's officers used maneuvering boards while those on the DORIA kept the sheets unused in a drawer. When shown a sheet such as this one during the official inquiry, DORIA captain Calamai admitted that he didn't know how to read one.

Frank Braynard tuckered this sheet away in his collection, preserving it for us future generations.

Very good condition.
