Various: pre-war - 1936 Dollar fleet plans w/ APL sticker

Product Description

American President Lines: A fold-out fleet brochure from 1936 featuring five sets of deck plans covering fourteen different ships.

The brochure was issued shortly before Dollar was forced out of business by the U.S. Maritime Commission and its ships given over to a new company to be known as American President Lines. Notice that APL put their sticker on the covering, covering up the old line name.

Flagships PRESIDENT HOOVER and PRESIDENT COOLIDGE were the largest Dollar ships and five decks are shown.

The "535" liners, so-called because of their length, are represented with four decks of plans for the PRESIDENT CLEVELAND, LINCOLN, PIERCE, TAFT, and WILSON. Ironically, these vessels entered the fleet in 1924 when Dollar outbid the Pacific Mail Steamship Company to purchase the fleet Pacific Mail had been leasing from the U.S. Shipping Board.

Slightly shorter "502" ships made up the bulk of the fleet. Three decks are shown for the PRESIDENT ADAMS, GARFIELD, and HARRISON. A different lay-out is shown for the three passenger decks on the PRESIDENT HAYES, MONROE, and VAN BUREN. PRESIDENT POLK, whose superstructure was burned and rebuilt after a 1924 fire, has a separate set of plans for three decks.

Out of this fleet of fourteen, only half would survive until 1945. Of those, only two were put back in use while the others were scrapped.
