MONTEZUMA: 1899 - Original oil painting

Product Description

Canadian Pacific - An original painting of the S.S. MONTEZUMA by Antwerp maritime artist Adrianus Johannes Jansen (1864-1943).

The portrait shows the MONTEZUMA at sea with passengers and crew on deck enjoying the air. The MONTEZUMA first sailed for Elder Dempster in 1899 as a freighter. Canadian Pacific took her over in 1903 and converted the ship into an emigrant hauler with a capacity of 500. In 1914 the British admiralty requisitioned the MONTEZUMA and converted her into an oiler. A U-boat torpedo ended her days in 1917.

Jansen would have painted this portrait during her Canadian Pacific era. He was known as a "pierhead" painter. Like Antonio Jacobson in New York, Jansen prowled the waterfront looking for work among ship owners, captains, and crew.

The elegant gilded frame measures 26" by 38" and is of unknown vintage. Some of the plaster trim work along the bottom edge is chipped.

Excellent condition.
