Buried deep inside is a gorgeous fold-out cutaway of the GREAT NORTHERN.

This line only lasted from 1915 to 1917. The main route was Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon. But during the winter of 1915-1916 the GREAT NORTHERN was switched to Hawaii service which is when this brochure was issued. The ship and her sister NORTHERN PACIFIC were then drafted for military duty in 1917 and the service was discontinued.

The sixteen-page brochure promotes the GREAT NORTHERN as "The Floating Palace of the Pacific". Photos show the First Class Observation Parlor, Music Room, Writing Room, Smoking Room, Colonial Dining Room, a cabin en suite, a two-berth stateroom, and Palm Garden Verandah. Tourist Class images include the Lounge, "Smoker", Dining Saloon, and a cabin. Plans show four decks. A color map show the Great Northern Railroad's track across the U.S. and the steamship routes to Hawaii and Portland, Oregon.

But it is the cutaway that is the blockbuster. And much to my continued delight, the unknown artist populated the ship with tiny figures. Elegantly dressed couples in Edwardian garb fill the First Class public rooms. Many decks down engineers are bending over the machinery. The galley is crowded with chefs in white coats and waiters carrying trays.
