Various Ships - 1948 Holland America fleet brochure w/ interiors

Product Description
Holland America Line: A twelve-page brochure from April 1948 as Holland America was once again offering transatlantic travel after the destruction of WW2.

"Full-rigged for LUXURY" is plastered across the cover and most of the brochure is dedicated to the NIEUW AMSTERDAM and her lovely interiors. There is a two-panel sea view and nineteen b&w photos, mostly of First Class.

The Grand Hall is shown before the upper balcony and spiral stairway were added. Also shown is the Smoking Room, Ritz-Carlton Café, Dining Room, Theatre, Solarium, several cabins, the pool and gym, and one of my favorite spaces, the Writing Room. Looking at the photo, you'd be hard pressed not to say the room was circa 2000, not 1938.

Two pages show Cabin and Tourist class rooms including the Jungle Bar.

The last two pages show two of HAL's miracle ships that were destroyed during the war and raised from the gunk to be restored WESTERDAM and VEENDAM), and one that served valiantly as a trooper (NOORDAM). The VEENDAM was bombed, burned, and sunk, yet the photos of the baronial Smoking Room with its leaded glass windows and the gleaming white Dining Room look straight out of 1924.
