ROMA: 1926 - Deluxe First Class interiors brochure from maiden year

Product Description

Navigazione Generale Italiana (NGI): A deluxe, thirty-six page interiors brochure issued for the ROMA in her maiden voyage year of 1926. Embossed into the center of the textured stock cover is the face of a Roman warrior.

One of the ultimate Italian floating palaces of the 1920s, whole regions of craftsmen must have been kept busy carving, sculpting, gilding, and painting the ROMA's First Class interiors. Every public space is dripping with ornamentation.

There are ten interior photos, each matched up with an etching of ancient Roman scenes. Captions are in English. The views show the Grand Vestibule, Dining Saloon, Ball Room, Bar, Enclosed Verandah, Writing Room, Entrance Hall, a two-bedded stateroom, a single stateroom, and the Promenade Deck.

A two-page color illustration shows the ROMA sailing through tranquil seas. Sadly, her demise was anything but tranquil. In 1940 her beautifully crafted interiors were ripped out, her superstructure cut off, and a flight deck was fitted atop the hull. In 1945 the ship was sunk by Italian torpedoes in order to prevent the German from sinking her in the entrance of Genoa harbor. 6.5" by 6.75".
