Product Description

P & O Line: An interiors brochure for P&O's "R" Class of deluxe liners to India and the Far East - RANCHI, RANPURA, RAWALPINDI, and RAJPUTANA. The ships all took their maiden voyage in 1925. 

The twenty-page brochure is undated but is from the 1930s. The opening photo shows a RANPURA portrait by Jack Spurling whose paintings are always full of action. First Class photographs, unidentified as to vessel, show the Dining Saloon, views of two different Smoking Rooms, Music Room, Promenade Deck, views of two different Lounges, a Cabin-de-Luxe, and a two-berth cabin.

Second Class photos include the Dining Saloon, Smoking Room, two-berth cabin, and the Barber's Shop.

The class is best remembered for the RAWALPINDI. Soon after conversion to an armed merchant cruiser in August 1939, the ship was escorting a convoy across the Atlantic when two German battleships attacked. Rather than surrender, RAWALPINIDI's captain fought back for forty minutes, allowing the convoy to safely scatter. The ship eventually was blown in two and sank with a heavy loss of life.
