NORTHERN STAR & OCEAN MONARCH -1974 2nd-to-last season

Product Description

Shaw Savill Line:  A fold-out brochure promoting Shaw Savill’s 1974 cruises on the NORTHERN STAR and OCEAN MONARCH.  “Sail away on a famous Sea Spectacular Holiday!” gushed the headline.

Color photos highlight NORTHERN STAR.  The rear-engined ship is shown on the cover and inside are six interior photos.  The liner was introduced in 1962 as a sister to the popular SOUTHERN CROSS.  That ship was sold out of the fleet in 1973 and successfully sailed for another thirty years.  Alas, longevity was not in the cards for NORTHERN STAR.  She broke down on the very first cruise listed in here.  Despite expensive repairs, she proved troublesome.  She went to the breakers at the end of 1975.

No photos are shown of the OCEAN MONARCH.  Just as well as Shaw Savill was regretting their decision to rebuild Canadian Pacific’s two-class EMPRESS OF ENGLAND into the one-class OCEAN MONARCH.  She was supposed to sail on her maiden voyage for the line in April 1970.  Instead, construction headaches kept in her in the yard until October 1971.  So at the end of the cruise service shown here, that troublesome vessel was sent to the breakers.
