NORMANDIE: 1935 - Rare Cafe-Grill dinner menu from August 1935

Product Description

French Line: A dinner menu from the NORMANDIE's exclusive Café-Grill dated August 4, 1935, the ship's third month in service. While dining in the ship's cavernous First Class restaurant was the place to be seen, slipping away incognito to the quieter Cafe-Grill was far more chic.

I've already selected my dinner - Le Caviar Frais Malossol, Consomme Froid Nicois, Sole Grillee Sauce Moutarde, perhaps something from the Le Buffet Froid, Salade Combinaison, La Bombe Yvette, and multiple bottles of appropriate wines.

Clive Harvey in his excellent book, "NORMANDIE: Liner of Legend", describes the Café-Grill, "It was an oval room with a vast sweep of fourteen windows; in fact they were so large as to make it appear the wall was made entirely of glass ...  It was furnished with sleek, chrome-framed leather-upholstered chairs set around matching chrome-framed square tables.  There were, however, touches of opulence in the form of walls sheathed in pigskin and lighting columns similar to those in the Grand Lounge."

The person who saved this menu was one of the lucky early passengers to enjoy the vista from the Café-Grill towards the stern. A few months after this dinner, during a retrofit to solve vibration and other problems, a Tourist Class Lounge was plunked upon the former First Class Sun Deck, forever sealing off the once splendid stern view.
