{"product_id":"munchen-1923-deluxe-interiors-brochure-in-color-b-w","title":"MUNCHEN: 1923 - Deluxe interiors brochure in color \u0026 b\u0026w","description":"\u003cp\u003eNorth German Lloyd:  A deluxe interiors brochure for the MUNCHEN issued around the time of her maiden voyage in 1923. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe brochure has thick stock embossed covers and inside are forty-eight pages with text in German.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColor artist's renderings showcase the First Class Dining Room, Ballroom, and Smoking Room, as well as a color view of the ship.  There are also six b\u0026amp;w photos of First Class areas, including cabins.  Second Class gets five photos of public areas and cabins, while even Third Class is included with four photos.  In addition there are b\u0026amp;w views of the loungers on the Sun Deck, the ship heading out to sea, and the Manhattan skyline. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe MUNCHEN had a tragic career.  She was almost completely destroyed by fire while docked in New York in 1930.  After extensive repairs, she remerged as the GENERAL VON STEUBEN (shorten to just STEUBEN in 1938).  At the close of World War 2, when the defeated German army was fleeing the advancing Russians, Hitler dispatched the STEUBEN to Pillau in the Baltic to load terrified refugees and wounded soldiers. Just days earlier the WILHELM GUSTLOFF had been torpedoed and sank with a huge loss of life. The STEUBEN  sailed on February 2, 1945, with an estimated 5,000 people on board.
