RYNDAM & MAASDAM - 1950s deluxe cruise plan w/ interiors

Product Description

Holland America Line: From the late 1950s, a deluxe cruise plan with interior photos for the RYNDAM and MAASDAM.

Seven decks are shown in detail with color-coding for cabin types. The plan is photo-filled with images unidentified as to vessel.

Color views show the Swimming Pool, passengers in the Smoking Room and two of deck scenes. Black and white photos, in addition to a four-panel portrait, show the Bar, Palm Court, Smoking Room, Gift Shop, Barber Shop, Promenade Deck, Library and Writing Room, Gymnasium, Lounge, Card Room, Dining Room, and a cabin.

Although largely forgotten today, at the time of their introduction these ships were groundbreakers. Each held 39 in First Class which was confined up top on Boat Deck. The rest of the passengers, all 850 of them, got free run of a large and comfy Tourist Class.

These ships did a little cruising in the early to mid 1950s but that service was mostly over by the STATENDAM when she introduced in 1957. The RYNDAM/MAASDAM had one flaw that made them unpopular for cruising - few cabins with private bathrooms. Americans cruising to the sun refused to troop down the hall to the loo.
