For westbound voyages the ship tended to carry Spanish and Portuguese migrants and workers to the Caribbean and Venezuela. Eastbound, Tourist catered to West Indian workers headed for Britain. In 1962 the stacks were replaced with a modern single version. During that same retrofit much of Cabin and Tourist was ripped out and replaced with a single class aimed at the bargain cruise market By 1970 the IRPINIA turned mainly to cheapie Mediterranean cruises, a role she played for a decade except for a break to masquerade as the ST. LOUIS in the movie \"Voyage of the Damned\".
