HIGHLAND Class - 1950s Royal Mail interiors brochure in color

Product Description

Royal Mail Lines: A twelve-page interiors brochure with color photos for the four ships of the HIGHLAND Class. Although undated, the brochure is from the late 1940s or early 1950s after the vessels returned from troopship duties.

The HIGHLAND MONARCH, HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN, HIGHLAND BRIGADE, and HIGHLAND PRINCESS were built in the late 1920s for the Nelson Line. A 1932 shake-up brought them into the Royal Mail fleet where they remained in service until 1960. A fifth sister was sunk in the war.

"Embellished by luxurious carpeting and delightful chintzy curtaining," enthused Royal Mail, "the Tudor style of decoration throughout the Public Rooms has resulted in providing just that degree of restfulness and quiet dignity associated with this Period."

Large color photos without mention of vessel show half-timbered splendor throughout. Views include the Lounge, Dining Saloon, two views of the Recreation Room, Smoke Room, and two cabins. A route map shows Royal Mail's South and North American destinations. Many pages also contain sketched vignettes showing delightful scenes onboard. The deco cover graphics appear to be pre-war Kenneth Shoesmith.
