ASTOR: 1987 - Thick German maiden season brochure

Product Description
GLOBUS Cruises: A seventy-six page brochure for ASTOR #2 covering her 1987 maiden year voyages. The text is in German.

In the beginning are a dozen pages about the ship with interior concept renderings while in back are deck plans and a starboard profile showing deck locations. In-between is cruise info with photos, route maps, and rates in German marks.

A recap is in order here - ASTOR #1 was built in the early 1980s as a German cruise ship to compete with Hapag Lloyd's EUROPA. That ship was unsuccessful and in 1984 was sold to South Africa's Safmarine to relaunch line voyages between Southampton and Cape Town. The ship was unsuccessful on that route too and was sold to the East Germans.

Safmarine built ASTOR #2 was a replacement. Oddly, the ships were almost identical in appearance. Only the trained eye of a ship buff would notice the extra bank of four windows along the superstructure. But Safmarine lost interest before ASTOR #2 was delivered and sold her to the GLOBUS Cruises. This 1987 brochure shows an ambitious schedule. Guess what? They were unsuccessful too and in 1988 ASTOR #2 was sold to Black Sea Shipping to become the FEDOR DOSTOEVSKIY. Confused yet? In 1995 she was renamed ASTOR. A date with the scrappers arrived in 2020.
