For Third - the Dining Salon. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe PATRIA sailed only a few more years for Fabre. In 1932 when she was leased to Messageries Maritimes for use in the Mediterranean. When WW2 started she was laid up in Haifa and taken over by the British. At this early stage in the war Hitler was still allowing Jews to flee Europe. Many tried to reach Palestine which was then under British control. Immigrants arrived in Haifa in broken down ferries and steamers but were denied entry.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome 1,900 refugees were transferred to the PATRIA which was going to take them to a refugee camp on Mauritius. But on the morning of November 25, 1940, just as the last refugees boarded the ship, the PATRIA was rocked by three explosions. The ship heeled over and quickly sank. 279 crew and passengers died in this act of sabotage. Later it was determined the explosion was the work of the Jewish underground army, the Haganah, who had meant only to damage the ship to prevent it sailing but had miscalculated the amount of explosives needed to disable the ship.
