On the flip side is a large illustration of the Lanai Kai next to the swimming pool with happy passengers enjoying the good life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA fold-out brochure (16\" by 18\") features color interior photos of the Cocktail Lounge, a deluxe cabin, an Island Suite, a studio cabin, Dining Room, Children's Playroom, a \"moderately priced accommodation\", Sun Deck Lanai, and the Orchid Room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn eight-page rates and sailings brochure shows the most expensive suites costing $375 p.p. from California to Hawaii while bargain hunters could squeeze into a shared A Deck cubby hole for $155 p.p.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn reality, \"the life\" was none too fun on the ship. Her maiden voyage was a disaster with flooding cabins and food poisoning. The company lost money because of the fuel-hogging ship's thick hull and dual engine compartments, the legacy of her original role as the troop transport GENERAL W.P. RICHARDSON. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the war American Export sailed her for a few years as LAGUARDIA and also lost money on the ship. In 1960 American President Lines rebuilt her into the PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT. Ship buffs suspect the ship was a money loser for APL.  Chandris then spent more money converting her into the cruise ship ATLANTIS in 1970, but quickly dumped her, also due to high fuel costs. Later years show the guzzling gal sailing as EMERALD SEAS, SAPPHIRE SEAS, and finally OCEAN EXPLORER 1.
