PATROCLUS: 1923 - Souvenir silverplated loving cup

Product Description

The PATROCLUS stirred controversy in November 1940 when, as an armed merchant cruiser, she came to the aid of the torpedoed White Star liner LAURENTIC, which in turn had stopped to rescue survivors from the torpedoed Elder and Fyffe's ship CASANARE. Since there was a sub in the vicinity, protocol dictated that the PATROCLUS not stop. But stop she did, and soon U-99 captain Otto Kretschmer chalked up his third sinking of the day. He had to fire seven torpedoes into the ship as she was carrying empty barrels which kept her afloat for five hours.
