Judging by the collection of public rooms in all corners of the ship, three classes were melded together for cruising.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe array of First Class public rooms on Promenade Deck leads from grand Social Hall to nifty little cocktail bar tuckered into a stern corner.  A small Verandah Cafe above on Boat Deck looks like a nice place to watch the seas roll by.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost cabins, even in First Class, don't have private bathrooms.  If you booked a cheapie cruise in one of the eight abreast closet-sized cabins on D Deck, you would have to hike up a deck and through a busy foyer to find the loo. All three classes are shown - First, Second, and Third. The ship sailed the Bremerhaven to New York route.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSkipping ahead to 1950 brings us to this fold-out 18\" by 21.5\" Soviet cruise brochure for the ship, now called ADMIRAL NAKHIMOV. The same seven decks are shown in smaller scale but with color-coding for cabin type. Fully open, the brochure reveals a route map of the Black Sea and illustration of the lightly modified ship. Eleven color photos show off cabins and public rooms, all decorated in a dour Kremlin-esque grandma style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe BERLIN sailed for twenty years without major incidents. But in January 1945, as a rescue ship for Germans fleeing the Russians, the ship hit a minefield. She stayed afloat and was taken under tow. The next day she hit another minefield, and had to be beached as a total loss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the ship-starved Soviets saw an opportunity and began raising the liner, only to have it sink again. The second attempt succeeded and the liner was rebuilt as the ADMIRAL NAKHIMOV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThirty years later the ship was in cruise service on the Black Sea. Just minutes after departing port late at night on August 31, 1986, the ADMIRAL NAKHIMOV was fatally struck broadside by a tanker. The deck plans are color coded and show a small Cabin Class on the topmost Promenade Deck with Economy Class taking up parts of three lower decks.
