Ship buffs suspect the ship was a money loser for APL. Chandris then spent more money converting her into the cruise ship ATLANTIS in 1970, but quickly dumped her, also due to high fuel costs. Later years show the guzzling gal sailing as EMERALD SEAS, SAPPHIRE SEAS, and finally OCEAN EXPLORER 1. Amazingly she wasn't scrapped until 2004, sixty years after her launch.

Very good condition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2236/1411/files/2679b_58baca07-2e01-44fe-95e1-914db70e9970.jpg?v=1780861806
president-wilson-president-cleveland-deluxe-1949-interiors-brochure
PRESIDENT WILSON & PRESIDENT CLEVELAND - Deluxe 1949 interiors brochure

American President Lines: A deluxe, twenty-four page interiors and destination brochure from August 1949 for the sisters PRESIDENT WILSON and PRESIDENT CLEVELAND.

APL went to special lengths with this one with textured stock paper and deckled edging on the cover. Half the brochure extols the beautiful of the Orient while the other half showcases interiors.

Views, unidentified as to vessel, include the Marine Veranda, Lounge, Card Room, Children's Playroom, Dining Room, Purser's Lobby, and three different cabins. A sample dinner menu offers Montana Rainbow Trout, Supreme of Golden Pheasant, and Grilled Filet Mignon with Pate de Foie. A large nighttime photo shows the PRESIDENT CLEVELAND docked at Hong Kong.

Very good condition.

American President Lines: From the mid-1950s a big (27" by 32") deck plan/brochure with color interior photos for the PRESIDENT CLEVELAND and PRESIDENT WILSON.

The Main Lounge is eye-popping: hot pink walls and ceiling matched with dark blue upholstery. Wow! By contrast the California Dining Room with its blue ceiling and copper chairs seems downright sedate. There is a photo of the Magellan Suite and another photo of a cabin with what at first glance looks like a flat screen computer monitor. Actually, it is a fold-up make-up mirror. There are detailed destination info and an abstract route map.

The flip side of the brochure is all deck plan. Six decks are shown with outdoor areas on Sun and Boat decks, public rooms and the outdoor pool on Promenade, cabins on Upper and A, with the California Dining Room and a few more cabins down on B Deck. Although the ships were originally built with three classes, everything on this plan is marked First with the except of several odd spaces on B Deck that are marked for 160 standee bunks in Third Class. Perhaps intended for the transport of troops?

Very good condition.

American President Lines: How elegant is this?
