GEORGE WASHINGTON: 1909 - Todd Shipyard 1921 "The Keel" issue about ship

Product Description
United States Lines - The August 1921 issue of "The Keel", Todd Shipyard's house journal, featuring the reconditioning of the GEORGE WASHINGTON.

The ship first set sail in 1909 for North German Lloyd. During WW1 she was confiscated by the U.S. and put into service as a troopship. Afterwards the fledgling U.S. Mail Lines sent her to Todd for a top-to-bottom overhaul. The shipyard proudly showcased their work in this twenty-eight page journal.

Besides several portraits, photos show the Ladies Lounge and Music Room, two views of the Social Hall, two views of the Smoking Room, Main Dining Room, Reading and Writing Room, a two-berth cabin, the Presidential Suite, Veranda Cafe, Promenade Deck, a de luxe stateroom, and the Second Cabin Smoking Room. More photos show the Bridge and Engine Room.

The journal describes the GEORGE WASHINGTON's reconditioning and entry into service as an "epochal event" and notes with pride that "the ship, as finished, is a tribute to the skill of American ship craftsmen." No where is it mentioned that it was German craftsmen that built the ship originally. Half the journal is about the ship and the other half is filled with shipyard news.

The GEORGE WASHINGTON sailed for just one voyage under U.S. Mail Lines before the company folded and was reborn as United States Lines.
