The brochure was issued in July 1939 as a joint collaboration between Grace, American Republic, Furness Prince, Pan American Airlines, and the Chilean State Railways to encourage tourists to sail down one side of South America, take a train or fly across, and then sail back up the other side.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGrace Line's SANTA LUCIA, one of four sisters built in the early 1930s, is featured in four pages with a big portrait, a large swimming pool photo, a comfy cabin view and a pic of one of the most remarkable features of this ship, the dining room with its retractable roof open to the stars.  The SANTA LUCIA and her three sisters had their restaurants high up on the Promenade Deck between the funnels to accommodate this unique feature.  This brochure was a swan song for the LUCIA as she was torpedoed and sunk off Algiers in November 1942. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFour pages are also given over to Grace Line's smaller trio of west coast South American liners, SANTA CLARA, SANTA BARBARA, and SANTA MARIA.  Besides a big two-page portrait, there are large photos of the pool area, a plush cabin, and the lounge filled with handsome models with sipping cool drinks.  Of this trio, only the SANTA MARIA survived the war and became Lauro Line's SURRIENTO.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext up are four pages for the American Republics trio, BRAZIL, URUGUAY, and ARGENTINA.  Until the year before they had been Panama Pacific's VIRGINIA, CALIFORNIA, and PENNSYLVANIA.  There is a big portrait, a cabin photo, a view of the pool, a large dining room scene, and two pics of the lounge.  The interiors show the original Williamsburg-inspired decor from the 1920s.  Post-war this was ripped out and replaced by Carmen Miranda tropical.   \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe final four-page section is for the Furness Prince Line ships; EASTERN PRINCE, NORTHERN PRINCE, WESTERN PRINCE, and SOUTHERN PRINCE.  Along with ARL these ships sailed down the east coast of South America.  As with the other lines, there is a big two-page portrait of a ship and then two pages of interior views.  Half of this Furness Prince fleet was lost during the war.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne last notable feature of this unusual brochure - there are two pages dedicated to Pan American-Grace Airways.  The photos of the DC-3 remind me of the planes my family traveled on while living in Brazil in the mid-1960s.  There was always a mishap - the stewardess would pour hot coffee on my father, the toilets would back up, an engine would catch fire.  Oh the good old days!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c!----\u003e","brand":"FR","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":49117211394329,"sku":"4156","price":55.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2236\/1411\/files\/4156.jpg?v=1718479339"},{"product_id":"mariposa-monterey-big-1930s-deck-plan-w-color-b-w-interior-photos","title":"MARIPOSA \u0026 MONTEREY: 1932 - BIG 1930s deck plan w\/ COLOR \u0026 b\u0026w interior photos","description":"\u003cp\u003eMatson Line - A large (32\" by 36\") deck plan from 1936-37 for the sister ships MARIPOSA and MONTEREY.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening folds reveal a treat - color interior photos showing the First Class Lounge, Night Club, and a deluxe suite plus the Cabin Class Lounge.  A big photo of one of the sisters is also in color.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe next folds shows a route map flanked by two big b\u0026amp;w photos of the Smoking Room and the Dining Salon.    \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOpened all the way, the plan shows six decks with lots of interesting details to note.  For example, the main embarkation foyer with Purser's Office is down next to the Dining Room on E Deck instead of its usual position on a higher deck. Smaller ones are sprinkled throughout but the gems are four, removable, large-format block prints (11\" by 15\") covered by protective onion skin and suitable for framing. What I enjoy is the level of detail visible in the photos, especially the Smoking Room and Bar. You can examine the ashtrays (often available on Nautiques), glassware and china (ditto), liquor bottles (on your own), and the original murals on the walls. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbout those murals - the late Mark Goldberg recounts in his book \"The 'Hog Islanders'\" the story of a voyage on the AMERICAN BANKER when it was chartered by American graduates of the famed Ecole des Beaux Arts heading to Paris for a reunion.  Passage was slow and the decor dreary.  To keep themselves amused, the passenger\/artists decided to spruce up the place by painting murals in the Lounge and Smoking Room\/Bar.
