EMPRESS OF JAPAN: 1930 - Souvenir portrait cup/saucer & dessert plate

Product Description
Canadian Pacific - A 1930s souvenir set of china featuring portraits of the speedy Pacific liner EMPRESS OF JAPAN.

The 3.25" diameter cup, 5.75" diameter saucer, and 6.5" diameter dessert plate each show a scene of the ship departing Vancouver Harbour. The caption reads, "C.P.R. R.M.S. 'EMPRESS OF JAPAN', the Queen of the Pacific, in the Lions Gateway outward bound for the Orient." The china is back-marked Royal Winton China.

Note the bucolic beauty of the ship's surroundings. At the time the china was produced, Canadian Pacific was fighting against a proposed bridge across the Lions Gateway, partly out of concern about reduced navigation and partly to protect real estate holdings that might lose value if the bridge was built. The company backed a 1927 plebiscite where Vancouverites rejected the project. Ecological damage to popular Stanley Park was a big reason.

But in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, the vote was taken again and the project approved. Lions Gate Bridge opened in 1938.

The cup and saucer are in very good condition with light wear and the dessert plate is in good condition with several hairline cracks.
