The mammoth steamer COLUMBUS with undoubtedly further increase the maritime fame of Germany.\" It was not to be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship never sailed under this name. Soon after the brochure was printed, work stopped due to the outbreak of war. Afterwards, the Treaty of Versailles stipulated that the unfinished liner should go to Great Britain as reparations where she became White Star Line's HOMERIC.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHow bitter that pill must have been for North German Lloyd! The company reused this brochure after the war, as indicated on the cover sticker. A sheet has been glued onto the first page explaining the switch: \"This booklet has already been published to a very great extent prior to the War, on the occasion of the launching of the S.S. COLUMBUS. Through the unfortunate result of the War, we were forced to deliver up this vessel ... but in the meantime a second steamer has been built on identical lines.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTipped-in half-tone illustrations of public rooms show grand expanses. Each picture page is covered by a sheet of onion skin printed with a handsome design. The opening illustration shows a massive liner getting ready to sail on a moonlight night. First Class interior views show the Grand Hall, Drawing Room, Dining Saloon, and Smoking Room. Tipped-in sketches from the shipyard show the double-bottom, the massive propeller shaft stay, the starboard propeller, the anchor, the 17 December 1913 launch, and a daytime portrait of the huge vessel passing the Rotesand lighthouse. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the very back are two fold-out sheets of plans showing seven decks encompassing both First and Second classes. Since work stopped on the COLUMBUS in August 1914, these might be the only deck plans ever issued for the ship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe COLUMBUS was one of two sister ships ordered by North German Lloyd.
